3/7 'Growing the Expectations of Teachers for Learners' by Christine Rubie- Davies
We read this as part of our faculty meeting and I summarised this (see link below)
Was surprised to find out that mixed ability groupings are way more effective than ability grouping, the evidence showing that in mixed ability groups the lower level achievers raise their performance by working with others slightly higher than them. I guess the self labeling that occurs when students are placed in ability groups has a psychological tendency to make students class themselves as only capable of that level. In other words, the grouping has an impact on students' expectations of themselves. And if they have a low expectation of themselves, according to how they perceive themselves to have been labelled, then they will only ever achieve at their expected level as they will not believe they are capable of more.
